Meet the National Committee

Rev Dr Richard Waugh QSM

A long-time AHSNZ member, Richard was raised in an aviation family. As a trained historian he has specialised in the history of New Zealand airlines from the 1930s to the 1980s and has authored/co-authored 12 civil aviation books. He has organised many aviation historical events around New Zealand and since 1998 has served as chaplain to the Honourable Company of Air Pilots (formerly Air Pilots Guild). Richard resides in Christchurch.

Ron Ark

Ron has served as Secretary/Treasurer of AHSNZ since 2016 and has wide experience of the New Zealand aviation historical scene. His aviation interests go back to childhood days when he lived close to Christchurch Airport. He has an extensive collection of aviation memorabilia, especially photographs. Continuing to live in Christchurch, he has been the Archivist at the Canterbury Aero Club since 1995 and more recently a trustee of NZ Aviation Images.

Phil Craig

An air traffic controller in Wellington, Phil has been active in AHSNZ for over 40 years, including service on the national committee and editing the Aerolog magazine for many years. His keen interest is to record aviation history as it occurs, and since 2017 he has edited the informative SPANZ Aero News.

Geoff Best

Geoff resides in Wellington. He has long involvement with AHSNZ from boyhood days and is a stalwart of the Wellington Branch. He has shared his photographic editing and experience in the print industry to help with many society publications. Geoff has served on the national executive for many years.

I have been on the National Committee for many years and enjoy the challenge of keeping the Society functioning and progressing into new ages. There are many new ways to communicate, many more sources of information, more fuel for our interest, and every day more history is made. I hope to be on board for many years to come.

Aaron Murphy

Aaron was strongly influenced by his grandfather’s flying career in World War II, and since a young age has been keenly involved in Canterbury aviation. He joined AHSNZ at the time he was beginning a commercial flying career at Wigram, more than 25 years ago. Today he is a Boeing 787 pilot. He is a long-time resident of Christchurch.

Martin Muller

Martin presently lives in Queenstown, soon to move to Christchurch. Raised in Southland, he has always been keenly interested in aviation, and especially aviation photography. He has long experience in graphic design work, including with the NZ Wings magazine, and his skills are now being most helpful to AHSNZ.

Andrew Brian

Andrew has had varied aviation experience in Canterbury and today is best known as the founder and curator of the New Zealand Helicopter Heritage Museum, based in Rangiora. He continues to seek out additional helicopters and memorabilia for display, and being semi-retired is available to serve the AHSNZ national committee.

John King

John resides in Auckland and has been involved in the aviation industry since joining NAC in 1965 at Christchurch, where he was raised. His photojournalism career led to historical research, nine aviation books and editorial work for several New Zealand aviation publications. He was well-known as the long-time editor of New Zealand Aviation News from 2008 to 20022. The Society is fortunate to have his experience and skills as editor of The Aero Historian.
